This blog hosts pictures of models painted by me (Alan O'Bryan), a four-time U.S. Golden Demon winner (2002-2003) and the 2013 West Coast Store Wars and 2016 Las Vegas Open Warmachine/Hordes Master Craftsman. I hope you enjoy these models and find inspiration here for your own work!
PLEASE NOTE: While I still sometimes use this blog to post pictures for linking to on forums, my main page has moved to www.gorillawithabrush.com. See you there!
I have several different formulas I use for yellow. Generally the basecoat is a combination of a mustard yellow (like GW Desert Yellow or the current equivalent) with a touch of yellow (like GW Golden Yellow or the current equivalent) and a mid-tone brown (GW Snakebite Leather or GW Graveyard Earth depending on the hue I want). Also depending on whether I'm going for a bolder yellow or a muted yellow I vary the ratios. For a model like Sturgis I then add in white to the basecoat (and sometimes a little more yellow) to build the highlight layers, keeping the paint nice and thin so that it goes on smooth. For more muted yellows I will use khaki and white to mix into the basecoat color for highlights.
Dude, I love your style and I was wondering, how are you producing those yellows?!
ReplyDeleteIs that a foundation paint or something? So f'n smooth!
Thanks!
